From an introductory review of transport and market context, the book proceeds to deal with the mechanical behavior, materials, defects, analysis and design of track and its components. High speeds and other aspects of train dynamics are considered in detail, together with the consequent requirements imposed on track and layout design. Finally, the author looks at different forms of traction, braking and tilting technologies.

Each chapter contains a concise theoretical analysis of the phenomena studied and applications, charts and designs for specific railway components. The book contains more than 400 figures and 100 tables and, in addition to the original work of the author, over 300 references have been used. Its intended readership comprises all those concerned with the design, operation and engineering management of railways, consulting engineers and students.
